Anyhow, I thought I'd divulge a little secret - that, may or may not in fact be much of a secret anymore. You see, I have a personal blog as well (want to go visit me there?).

Whole Foods has a huge range of kid recipes - from breakfast to lunch to snacks to meals - and, it's all healthy!

If you are looking for recipes that kids can cook with a little help, check out this site by Kid's Health. They even have some recipes for kids with cystic fibrosis, diabetes, vegetarians, lactose intolerance, and celiac disease!

Tiny Tummies, another website with some great healthy recipes, is also geared to get little ones in the kitchen to help. The idea is that by getting them into the kitchen, they'll be more likely to eat the fixings. Check out their great list of what's in season and the recipes to go with!

We also found Mollie Katzen's website - she's an author of some great children's recipe books and has listed some of her fabulous (and healthy) recipes online, too!

Speech Delays - What To Do

If you discover that your child may have a speech or language delay, one of your first steps would be to see a speech pathologist. There can be a number of reasons for these delays, so one of the first things the speech pathologist will do is test your child in the following areas: receptive language (what your child understands), expressive language (what your child can say), body language and gestures, and oral motor status (how the anatomy of the mouth works for speech as well as for eating and drinking). After the testing, the speech pathologist will better know what may be hindering your child and will be able to come up with an individual plan for your child to overcome his delays.

In the meantime, there are some things parents can do to help their children develop in the areas of speech and language:

1. Talk with your children. It doesn't matter if your 8 month old really understands what you are saying, but it's in this time that they are soaking up the sounds of your particular language, which will be part of the framework for later use. If you feel odd carrying on a one-sided conversation, simply explain your routines as you do them.
2. Sing silly songs, especially ones with repetitive sounds and noises. Encourage them to try and imitate you.
3. Start reading to your child by the time he is 6 months old. Start out with books with textures and vivid pictures with simple wording. Read and try to engage them - "Do you see the brown cow?" As your child gets older, start reading more predictable books that your child can memorize. Eventually your child will try and pretend to read the book back to you. It's okay that your child is memorizing and not really reading. Memorizing is one of the first steps to reading.
4. Play the name game as soon as your child begins saying their first word(s). Point at items and name them, encouraging your child to do the same.

Lastly, if your child does have a speech delay, don't panic. In most situations, with the right treatment from a speech pathologist, children are back on track within 1-2 years.

Lollipop Cookies

INGREDIENTS

3/4 cup butter, softened
3 ounces cream cheese
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
assorted colors of paste food coloring
24 lollipop sticks

DIRECTIONS

In a bowl cream butter, cream cheese and sugar until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla; beat until smooth.
In a medium bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt. Add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture. Stir till soft dough forms. Divide dough into fourths. Tint each with a different food color. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 2 hours.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Working with half of each color, shape dough into 3/4 inch balls and for each cookie place 1 pink, 1 green, 1 blue and 1 orange ball together to make 1 large ball. Shape into a 12 inch long roll (like a snake), starting at one end, coil roll to make a 2 3/4 inch round cookie. Place cookies 3 inches apart on lightly greased baking sheet. Carefully insert lollipop sticks into bottoms of cookies.
Bake cookies for 8 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool and store in an airtight container.

Cancer In A Bottle?

I've posted a lot about toxins in the things we put IN and ON our bodies, and so it came to no surprise to me when Rutgers University found a link between moisturizers and skin cancer. I mean, what exactly DO you expect when you apply lotions filled with parabens (Read: Cancer Causing Agents) on your skin everyday? I mean, really?

So many people are surprised by studies like these - they thought our government had a handle on it, that our government would protect them. I'm incredibly sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the FDA only limits certain chemicals. When it comes to cosmetics and bodycare, there isn't much by way of standards and regulations for what they can put into their products.

It's up to YOU to read your own labels to know what's safe, and what's not. Ignore the label's claims about organic or organic ingredients (I'll talk more about this later), because just because an item SAYS it has organic items, it doesn't make it so (another faulty FDA law...or non-law).

Exercise your right to read the labels, and carefully. For more information about chemicals you should be watching out for, read below. And, for more information, go to Skin Deep- where you can search for your particular product to see how it rates for safety.

The Dirty Dozen Chemicals in Cosmetics

1. Antibacterials
Overuse of antibacterials can prevent them from effectively fighting disease-causing germs like E. coli and Salmonella enterica. Triclosan, widely used in soaps, toothpastes and deodorants, has been detected in breast milk, and one recent study found that it interferes with testosterone activity in cells. Numerous studies have found that washing with regular soap and warm water is just as effective at killing germs.

2. Coal Tar
Coal tar is a known human carcinogen used as an active ingredient in dandruff shampoos and anti-itch creams. Coal-tar-based dyes such as FD&C Blue 1, used in toothpastes, and FD&C Green 3, used in mouthwash, have been found to be carcinogenic in animal studies when injected under skin.

3. Diethanolamine (DEA)
DEA is a possible hormone disruptor, has shown limited evidence of carcinogenicity and depletes the body of choline needed for fetal brain development. DEA can also show up as a contaminant in products containing related chemicals, such as cocamide DEA.

4. 1,4-Dioxane
1,4-Dioxane is a known animal carcinogen and a possible human carcinogen that can appear as a contaminant in products containing sodium laureth sulfate and ingredients that include the terms “PEG,” “-xynol,” “ceteareth,” “oleth” and most other ethoxylated “eth” ingredients. The FDA monitors products for the contaminant but has not yet recommended an exposure limit. Manufacturers can remove dioxane through a process called vacuum stripping, but a small amount usually remains. A 2007 survey by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found that most children’s bath products contain 10 parts per million or less, but an earlier 2001 survey by the FDA found levels in excess of 85 parts per million.

5. Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde has a long list of adverse health effects, including immune-system toxicity, respiratory irritation and cancer in humans. Yet it still turns up in baby bath soap, nail polish, eyelash adhesive and hair dyes as a contaminant or break-down product of diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea and quaternium compounds.

6. Fragrance
The catchall term “fragrance” may mask phthalates, which act as endocrine disruptors and may cause obesity and reproductive and developmental harm. Avoid phthalates by selecting essential-oil fragrances instead.

7. Lead and Mercury
Neurotoxic lead may appear in products as a naturally occurring contaminant of hydrated silica, one of the ingredients in toothpaste, and lead acetate is found in some brands of men’s hair dye. Brain-damaging mercury, found in the preservative thimerosol, is used in some mascaras.

8. Nanoparticles
Tiny nanoparticles, which may penetrate the skin and damage brain cells, are appearing in an increasing number of cosmetics and sunscreens. Most problematic are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide nanoparticles, used in sunscreens to make them transparent. When possible, look for sunscreens containing particles of these ingredients larger than 100 nanometers. You’ll most likely need to call companies to confirm sizes, but a few manufacturers have started advertising their lack of nanoparticle-sized ingredients on labels. 9. Parabens
(methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butyl-, isobutyl-) Parabens, which have weak estrogenic effects, are common preservatives that appear in a wide array of toiletries. A study found that butyl paraben damaged sperm formation in the testes of mice, and a relative, sodium methylparaben, is banned in cosmetics by the E.U. Parabens break down in the body into p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which has estrogenic activity in human breast-cancer cell cultures.

10. Petroleum Distillates
Possible human carcinogens, petroleum distillates are prohibited or restricted for use in cosmetics in the E.U. but are found in several U.S. brands of mascara, foot-odor powder and other products. Look out for the terms “petroleum” or “liquid paraffin.”

11. P-Phenylenediamine
Commonly found in hair dyes, this chemical can damage the nervous system, cause lung irritation and cause severe allergic reactions. It’s also listed as 1,4-Benzenediamine; p-Phenyldiamine and 4-Phenylenediamine.

12. Hydroquinone
Found in skin lighteners and facial moisturizers, hydroquinone is neurotoxic and allergenic, and there’s limited evidence that it may cause cancer in lab animals. It may also appear as an impurity not listed on ingredients labels.

Of the more than 10,000 chemical ingredients in personal care products, 89 percent have not undergone safety testing.
On average, American women use 12 personal care products a day, and men average six products daily. That means an adult is likely to be exposed DAILY to 126 unique chemical ingredients in personal care products alone.
We know that the skin is not a solid barrier – it’s a penetrable organ that can easily absorb chemicals, especially with repeat exposure. Derman absorbtion is commonly used to transmit chemicals to the bloodstream, notably with nicotine and birth control patches.
Toxic chemicals find their way into our bodies, our breast milk and our children. And diseases linked to synthetic chemicals – including breast cancer, testicular cancer and reproductive problems – are on the rise.

Speech Delays - Ages 0-2

Many of us wonder if our children are saying enough words. And, before we know it keeping up with the Joneses of this world begins to make us doubt our own parenting and our own children. We begin to compare how our child is speaking compared to Sally or little Jack, and try to rack our brains to think of any other children we may know in our child's age range.

And, before you know it, you've convince yourself that your child is behind.

Or, maybe you don't. Maybe you think your child is doing just grand, and then one day the pediatrician blows you mind with the news that your child is behind.

The following are some warning signs for language development delay (borrowed from BabyCenter):

Birth to 12 Months

by 4 months, doesn't imitate the sounds her parents make
by 6 months, isn't laughing or squealing
by 8 or 9 months, isn't using sounds to get your attention
by 9 months, hasn't begun babbling
at 10 months, doesn't respond to her name
by 9 or 10 months, isn't letting you know when she's happy or upset

12 to 15 Months

at 12 months, doesn't use gestures such as waving or shaking her head
by 12 months, isn't using at least a couple of consonants (p, b, etc.)
by 12 months, isn't somehow communicating to you when she needs help with something
at 15 months, doesn't understand and respond to words like "no" and "bye-bye"
by 15 months, isn't using at least six different gestures (waving, pointing, etc.)
by 15 months, can't say at least one to three words

18 to 24 Months

at 18 months, isn't saying at least six to ten words
by 18 to 20 months, isn't pointing out things of interest, such as a bird or airplane overhead
by 20 months, isn't making at least six consonant sounds
at 21 months, doesn't respond to simple directions
by 21 months, doesn't pretend with her dolls or herself (brushing her hair, feeding her doll, etc.)
at 24 months, can't join two words together
at 24 months, doesn't know the function of common household objects — toothbrush, telephone, fork, etc.
by 24 months, doesn't imitate actions or words of others
at 2 years, doesn't point to body parts when asked

I know a lot of men tend to feel left out when it comes to the whole parenting thing. I mean, many magazines focus mostly on moms - actually, marketing in general tends to. And, then...there are the mommy groups and the such. And, pregnancy? It's all about the moms and babies, and dad often gets overlooked.

I came across this pretty great book called: The Modern Mom's Guide to Dads - Ten Secrets Your Husband Won't Tell You by Hogan Hilling and Jesse Jayne Rutherford. It talks about:

What your husband's fears, hopes, desires, and frustrations are
How to get him involved in the housework and childcare without manipulating him
How to reduce conflict in your marriage
And best of all, how to get some rest and time for yourself

It's a great book and my husband and I both recommend it - but, I wanted to hear some of YOUR advice too.

So, dads (and moms, too)...tell us what your biggest piece advice is concerning the fathers of our children. It can relate to anything...from what you're really thinking to housework to raising children...just tell us (in our comments)!

Getting Ready to Make a Baby...or You just found out you are Preggers...

I'm not trying to play doctor here, but over the years of working in a nutrition dept of a health food store and being here on cafemom, i have noticed many moms don't know where to start nutritionally. Hope I can help.

Here's my list of recommendations to talk about w/ your doctor or mid-wife. as we all know, natural is usually best, but it doesn't always mean safe. some people might be allergic to an ingredient in a product i've suggested. so always read everything before you take it and talk to your doctor/mid-wife before beginning anything, even something natural.

1. A good prenatal vitamin will supply you with the vitamins and mineral you'll need. This does not mean you can eat junk food, you still need to eat a healthy diet. Vitamins are supplements and only used to supplement your daily intake, not replace it. My suggestions are limited because in my experience whole food vitamins are the only ones anyone should be taking. They are safe enough to take on an empty tummy and generally don't cause problems for mom's experiencing high levels of morning sickness.

Many of them are made with certified organic ingredients. Prenatals should be taken when you are trying to conceive (before you get preggers) to insure you have the proper vitamins in your system right at the time of conception. Studies show that the need for higher amounts of vitamin b's (found in prenatals) are most necessary in the first 6 weeks of fetal development. Most mamas don't even know they are preggers that early and miss taking a prenatal at this early of the game. So if you are lucky enough to be planning the conception, start the prenatal now!

2.Another supplement you should start before conception, if possible, are EFA's (essential fatty acids) these are your Omega's, EPA, and DHA. Most commonly found in fish oils (dha & epa) but you can get omega's from flax oil, primrose, borage, pumpkin seed and chia seeds. Omegas are important because they help lubricate joints, good for mood support/brain function, great for hair skin nails, healthful for heart health, and a good hormone balance. DHA is essentialin fetal brain development and for a new born, up to age 2. "DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) is a polyunsaturated fatty acid, and is an essential building block of brain and nerve tissue. DHA cannot be synthesized by the body, and therefore must be obtained by a diet high is deep-sea cold water fish.

DHA, which constitutes approximately 40% of the brain, supports brain development during the last trimester of pregnancy when the unborn child's demand for neurological growth increases greatly. If added to the mother's diet, it can help prevent the depletion of the mother's store of DHA and support the developing baby's essential fatty acid needs. Currently, the proposed Adequate Intake of DHA for pregnant and lactating women is 300 mg per day. (ISSFAL)*

The omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, play important structural roles as components of cellular membranes. Ongoing clinical studies support the role of EPA and omega-3 fatty acids in health and disease.

Clinical investigations are continually carried out on the importance of DHA and omega-3 fatty acids in health and disease.

3. Pregnancy Tea by Traditional Medicinals or Yogi Tea. These teas support the uterus. Best to use during pregnancy. Using the tea after delivery, helps the uterus contract back to normal and keeps it toned. This is also part of your water intake you'll need. Ugh, I hated all the water I had to drink. Adding some lemon to the tea is tasty, and gives you a little vit c.

4. Protein. You'll be told to eat a lot of it. Remember Protein doesn't have to be from animals. "What is the difference between animal and plant protein?

Animal foods such as meat, dairy, eggs, poultry, and fish are complete proteins because they contain sufficient levels of all essential amino acids.

Plant proteins come from foods such as beans, nuts, peas and soy products. Milk products and eggs are good sources for lacto-ovo vegetarians.

What is a complementary protein?

Plant proteins tend to be limited in one or more essential amino acids. For example, beans are low in the amino acid lysine, while rice is rich in lysine.

When the amino acids from two or more foods together make up a complete protein with sufficient levels of all the essential amino acids, these food pairings are called "complementary proteins".

Examples include grains and legumes or legumes and seeds and nuts.

People following a vegetarian diet must eat protein foods that have complementary proteins so that the essential amino acids missing from one protein food can be supplied by another.

What are some examples of complementary proteins?

Beans and tortillas

Peanut butter sandwich

Macaroni and cheese

Tofu with rice

Hummus with pita bread

Chickpeas and rice

Do people following a vegetarian diet need to eat complementary proteins at every meal?

It was once believed that complementary proteins had to be consumed at every meal. We now know that intentional combining at each meal isn't necessary.

As long as you eat a variety of plant foods, such as brown rice, corn, nuts, seeds, whole grains and wheat within each 24 hour period, your protein needs should easily be met."

5. if you experience constipation, you can add more magnesium to your diet. some good ones on the market are Mama Calm by natural vitality and Ionic Fizz by Pure Essence Labs

6. The Last 6 weeks of your term:Check out Dr. Christopher's Pre-natal. It is used only during the last 6 weeks of pregnancy and it's traditionally used to help prepare the uterus and vagina for delivery.

After Baby is Born:

Stay on that prenatal or switch to the Post Natal by Pure Essence Labs

Stay on those EFA's especially if you are breastfeeding, because that growing brain of baby's still needs all the help it can get. Up to hte age of 2 at the least.

Keep up with the water intake. You need it to produce milk.

Other helpful nutrients we need help getting because of lack of healthful diets:

Digestive Enzymes:if you eat a lot of cooked foods then the natural enzymes of those foods are killed during the cooking process. Enzymes are needed to digest foods. There are two ways to get enzymes: Fresh, uncooked food, or if it's been cooked then our body supplies the enzymes. Well, this takes away from our reserve of enzymes needed for energy. Heatstroke And Little Ones

I've heard that if my toddler gets too hot, he could suffer heat stroke. What is that?

Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition that occurs when a person becomes extremely overheated. Basically, the body's temperature rises while its ability to cool off shuts down. Babies and young children are especially vulnerable to heat stroke. Your toddler might get heat stroke if he plays outside in very hot weather, for example, especially if he becomes dehydrated or if he's dressed too warmly. A severe sunburn can also make him susceptible. Leaving him in a parked car — which you should never do — would put him at risk, too. (In fact, heat stroke can occur within minutes in a car, where the temperature quickly climbs much higher than the outside temperature.)

How will I know if my toddler has heat stroke?

Your toddler may first show signs of heat exhaustion, which is milder. These symptoms include thirst, fatigue, leg or stomach cramps, and cool, moist skin.

If heat exhaustion progresses to heat stroke, your child may have any of the following symptoms:

• A temperature of 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39.4 degrees Celsius) or higher — but no sweating

• Hot, red, dry skin

• Rapid pulse

• Restlessness

• Confusion

• Dizziness

• Headache

• Vomiting

• Rapid, shallow breathing

• Lethargy (Your toddler might not respond as strongly as usual when you call his name or tickle his skin, for example.)

• Unconsciousness

You'll also want to watch for signs of dehydration.

What should I do if I suspect my child has heat stroke?

You'll need to bring your toddler's internal temperature down as quickly as possible. Time is of the essence — a child suffering from severe heat stroke can easily slip into unconsciousness.

First, call 911. Then undress your toddler completely and lay him down in a cool area. (If you're outside in the sun, find some shade, but if at all possible, move him into a cool room.) While you're waiting for the ambulance, sponge down his body with a washcloth or rag dipped in cool water, and fan him. (You can use an electric fan or simply fan him with something in your hand, like a magazine.) Talk to him reassuringly to keep him calm. Don't give him anything to drink. And though you may be tempted to give your toddler acetaminophen (Tylenol), it won't lower a temperature caused by heat stroke.

If your child is showing signs of heat exhaustion but it hasn't progressed to heat stroke, bring him indoors — to an air conditioned room, if possible — and give him plenty of liquids (not too sugary or too cold, though, or he might get stomach cramps). You might also give him a cool bath or shower and keep him indoors for the rest of the day. If he doesn't seem to be improving quickly, take him to the doctor or emergency room.

How can I prevent my toddler from getting heat stroke?

Keep in mind that it doesn't take much to bring on overheating, especially if your child is active on a hot day or he hasn't acclimated himself to the hot weather (in the beginning of summer, for example). Dress him in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Make sure he drinks more fluids than usual on hot days and takes frequent breaks. When the temperature is really severe, keep him indoors. (If your home is very hot and you don't have air conditioning, seek comfort at a public library, the mall, or a community shelter provided especially for relief from the heat.)

Italian Meatloaf (with Carrot) from Deceptively Delicious

This is a perfect place to use a food processor to save time. Finely chopped raw carrot will work as well as puree.

Ingredients:

Serves 8

Nonstick cooking spray
1 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs (seasoned)
1/2 cup nonfat skim milk
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 onion , finely chopped
2 stalks celery , finely chopped
1 pound lean ground turkey
1/2 cup grated Parmesan
1/2 cup carrot puree
1/4 cup ketchup
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 cup bottled tomato sauce
4 slices turkey bacon

Preheat the oven to 350°. Coat a 9" x 5" loaf pan with cooking spray.

In a large bowl, soak the breadcrumbs in milk.

Coat a large nonstick skillet with cooking spray and set it over medium-high heat. When the skillet is hot, add the oil. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, 7 to 10 minutes. Add the celery and cook 3 to 4 minutes longer. Scrape the mixture into the bowl with the breadcrumbs. Add the turkey, Parmesan, carrot puree, ketchup, salt and pepper, and stir to combine.

Turn the mixture into the loaf pan and smooth the top. Spread tomato sauce over the meatloaf and lay the strips of bacon on top. Bake until the center of the meatloaf is no longer pink and the bacon begins to brown, 45 to 50 minutes. Cut into slices and serve.

Summer often comes with aching backs and sore muscles, and taking a day to the spa for every ache and pain just isn't feasible (for most of us). Try the tips below to create your own in-house (and affordable) spa.

For aching feet:
Fill a tub or basin with warm water and a few drops of your favorite essential oil. If your feet are really tired and sore, try a mix of lavender and peppermint oils. Soak your feet for 10-15 minutes. Then, apply sugar to your feet (or a store bought or other homemade scrub) and rub in. Use a pumice stone to smooth away any particularly rough spots. Next, rinse your feet and dry them. Use your favorite soothing lotion (or add some lavender essential oil to an unscented lotion) and massage it into your feet and legs. Once your lotion is massaged in, put The Happy Company Soothing Cozy Slippers on and relax as the pain melts away from your feet.

For an aching back:
Use The Happy Company's Foot and Body Roller (which is also great for feet) to massage the muscles in your back. For more relief, have a friend or partner apply the therapy. Afterwards, use The Happy Company's Hot or Cold Gel Water Bottle to soothe and reduce swelling in your muscles. For extra relief, try mixing some peppermint oil and a carrier oil (like olive oil) and massaging it into muscles that hurt and reapplying the Hot or Cold Gel Water Bottle.

Headache:
In a darkened room, use a carrier oil such as olive oil (about the size of a quarter) and a few drops of peppermint essential oil, massage your into and around your hairline, temples, and the back of your neck. Next, gently press beneath your eyebrows (where they start, closest to your nose) to relieve pressure. Do some gentle stretching of your neck - side to side, and then turn your chin toward your shoulder, gently grasping the back of your head with your hand and lightly pulling down. Repeat on other side. Then, use the Happy Company Soothing Gel Eye Mask to help sooth any eye strain or headaches away.

Creating a spa at home can be easy, and incredibly affordable with a just a few main supplies. Try recreating your home spa often to keep yourself relaxed and at peace - and best of all, happy.

Sock Monkey Virtual Room Makeover

The Room:

The issue: Heidi wants her one year old son, Martin to have a more pulled-together room, but they are on a budget. She prefers to keep the color the same in this room, and for a theme that can be unisex and not have to be redone for future little ones. Storage space is also a problem.

MY DESIGN PICKS
Because the family was on a budget, I tried choosing inexpensive or DIY projects when I could, centering only a few key items. Here's what I came up with:

If you are a fan of names being spelled out in a child's room, this is a great option. For a cheaper alternative, try using scrapbook paper in the key colors, and use a contrast color for the letters. Not EVERYTHING has to have the sock monkeys on them. Then, string it up with a ribbon.

Another letter option are these great custom-painted sock monkey letters. But, at $18 a piece, they may not be friendly to a smaller budget. If you are handy with a paint brush, consider making your own version. (Click photo to buy)

Next up - Bedding. We realize that the little guy is still in a crib, but we love these sheets. And, since he's a toddler, we figure it's better to buy up rather than crib sheets that may not be used for much longer. Most of these colors could work in this room, although our favorites were the classsic red stripe or slate blue stripe. (These sheets can also be made into fitted crib sheets.)

I also liked this quilt - although at $395, it might not be the sort of thing that would fit in a smaller budget. So, consider a solid colored comforter, or perhaps just a throw. Add a few bright throw pillows to pack in a little extra PUNCH. (Click photo to buy)

What would a sock monkey room be without a sock monkey? This customized sock monkey is not only bright and funky, but he's got baseballs all over him - something our little room owner loves. This little guy would look great on the bed (in the bed) with the more original sock monkey or alone. This guy is about $25. (Click photo to buy)

STORAGE SOLUTIONS:

One of the first things I noticed about the room, was the need for "boundaries" within certain sections. What I mean is, if you have a shelf and place objects on it, most likely (if they are used much), they will spill out all over the place. A great idea is to buy small containers - whether clear plastic, decorative boxes, or woven baskets. Buy several and use them to hold diapers, accessories, toys, etc. This will hold SO much more than if you were to not use them. These 2 baskets (for a set) are right under $16. This will most likely be the cheapest you find them, unless you scour clearance aisles and sales (which very well could pay off!) (Click photo to buy). Also, for a bit more color, you can also line these baskets/boxes with your favorite fabrics.

Heidi says that she and her husband use their son's closet as well, so finding ample space can be rough. If you haven't already, I HIGHLY recommend one of these closet organizers by Closet Maid. It costs right under $70, and they are awesome. Use the very top shelf for blankets, seasonal sweaters, etc. Put those things in clear plastic containers with lids and stack them as far up as you can. Use the top two clothing racks for your clothing, and the bottom left one for his. Canvas collapsible boxes/buckets (also at Lowes) can be bought inexpensively for the middle section to hold extra clothes or toys and books.

This storage piece is also great. It has the canvas "drawers" that can easily be taken out, or left in. Use them to stack toys in, or remove a couple of the drawers, and use it to shelve books instead. --Not to mention, the entire top of the piece. Only $79.99 at Target.

A few other things to consider: Try a hanging hamper to get the clothes basket out of the way, and to free up more floor space. Move the bassinet to storage if you are no longer using it. Use some unique shelves to make neat displays with colorful toys on the wall. To break up floor space, consider adding a fun rug to the room.

Babywearing 101 - Part II

When it comes to babywearing, there are literally thousands of choices. For newbies, the choices can be a little daunting. Below, are the basic types of slings:

Pouch Sling
A pouch sling is a piece of fabric which is sewn together at the ends (making a tube) and folded to form a pocket. The “tube” of fabric is folded in on itself and then draped over the shoulder (putting one arm and head inside the “hole”) like a sash. The baby then can sit in the pouch in the front or side (and sometimes, back). These slings are easy to use and great for slipping on and off. However, be sure to measure well for the sizing, because if you choose the wrong size it will most likely not be adjustable. Also, you and your partner will most likely need two different slings (unless you are the exact same size). Because pouch slings are not adjustable, it can be difficult to get a snug carrying position, especially one that fits tightly against your body.
Examples: Modmum, Hotslings

Ring Sling
This is a long piece of fabric where one end is attached to two rings and the other end is threaded through them, forming a “sash” of sorts. The fabric creates a “pocket” and the different edges of the fabric can be pulled tighter, to create a more snug hold. Some ring slings feature padding in the shoulder (so the fabric doesn’t dig in) and in the edges (or rails - where baby’s legs are) for extra comfort. Ring slings are good for vertical distribution of weight, and are quick to get on and off. The ‘tail’ material can be used for discreet breastfeeding, and can even be wrapped around the ring if becomes uncomfortable. With a ring sling, many parents can share the same sling (except in large size differences).

Wrap Sling
This is a long, stretchy piece of fabric which you wrap and tie around your body so that your baby is held securely. With wraps, you generally tie the wrap around your body first and then slip your baby/toddler in. Wraps are great for distributing weight across your body as you can wrap between your shoulders. This wrap is incredibly versatile and can be worn by parents in a variety of sizes.

Backpacks and Soft Carriers
The backpack carrier is basically a carrier with straps that go over the shoulders, much like a backpack. Baby can be worn in the front or back. Some backpack carriers are even equipped with neck support for infants.

Some of the most meaningful gifts that I've ever received were handcrafted. For me, it means the world to me that someone took time out of their life to make something so unique and so individual FOR ME. This book is ESPECIALLY great if you are looking to make birthdays a little more special or are a new family (or not so new) and would love to create some new traditions of your very own.

Local Goodness: Blackburn Spray Park

Surprisingly (or, maybe not so much), Paducah, Kentucky has it's very own spray park - a spray park I knew nothing about until this past weekend. Built in 2006, Blackburn Spray Park features a large mushroom-shaped sprinkler, many fountains, a seal mini slide and more. Inside the spray park are a few large umbrellas that shade the large benches beneath them. Right outside the spray park, is a small playground and grassy areas, perfect for a picnic.

The best thing about Blackburn Park? Admission is free. And, clean. And, lots of fun.

(AppleBee's Blondie Brownies)

2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
3 /4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 1/4 sticks unsalted butter (10 Tbsp.)
2 cups packed golden brown sugar
2 large eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
3/4 cup chocolate chips
3/4 cup chopped pecans
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Flour and butter a 9 x13 x 2 pan.
Sift flour into a bowl. Mix flour, baking powder, salt, and baking
soda. Set aside. Melt butter. In mixing bowl, place melted butter
and add sugar, mixing well. Add eggs and vanilla, mixing well.
Add flour slowly, blending. Batter will be slightly thick.
Spread in pan. Sprinkle chocolate chips and pecans over all.
Bake for 25 − 30 minutes.

Beginning Kindergarten

Kindergarten can be an exciting time in a child’s life - a time full of fresh possibilities and the opportunity to learn. It can also spur up a little anxiety if you or your child are unsure if you are both ready. To help prepare you, I asked Cliff Owen, the Director of Instruction at McCracken County Public Schools, to weigh in on transitioning into Kindergarten.

Skills your child should possess when entering into Kindergarten:

Ability to “recognize colors, numbers, and letters.” Practice identifying numbers, colors, and letters wherever you go - even if it’s identifying numbers on price tags, colors of shirts, and letters on signs while out shopping.

Ability to “recognize their name.” Although your child may not be able to write their name yet, they should be able to recognize their name. Practice with your child, writing out different names on card-stock and having them select the correct card. You can also have them practice writing their own name, if they will.

Ability to “play well with others.“ Get together with a few other parents and their children. Let your child practice sharing and have fun playing with children he or she is not familiar with. Make sure your child is aware of boundaries such as hitting, biting, and spitting.

Ability to “cut with scissors.” Have your child practice cutting straight and curved lines with scissors to help develop the muscles required to hold a pencil.

Ability to sit and listen to stories being read or someone talking. Practice by reading to your child and asking them to sit quietly and listen - or, head to the library for story time! Be sure to pick stories with topics that your child finds interesting to keep the learning fun!

Ability to “communicate with others.” Practice walking around, pointing to objects and naming them. This fun game well help expand your child’s vocabulary and can help them master their language skills.

Ability to express him or herself. Your child should have some basic language skills down and should be able to express their thoughts in some way. Try really listening to your child, and asking them questions - and wait, without interrupting, for their answers.

Ability to sort and group colors and like objects. At this age, your child should be able to sort and group some things. Try laying out four different objects, three of the same color and have them choose the one that doesn’t belong. Or, you can do groups - like, three cars and a cow - Which doesn’t belong? Don’t worry if your child falters or gets confused. Simply show them the correct object and praise them for their good effort.

Ability to wash their hands and perform other bathroom tasks. Kindergartners should know how to do basic bathroom tasks on their own: go potty, wash and dry hands, pull their pants back up, etc. If your child has trouble with any of these basics, be sure to help them practice.

Ability to dress themselves. Although you may not prefer to let your child pick out their wardrobe (Hello, Disney Princess!), you should let them try their hand at manipulating things like zippers, buttons, velcro, buckles, and whatever else clothes come made with these days. Your child should be able to unbuckle and buckle their belts, unbutton and button buttons, unzip and zip zippers, and so on. It’s okay if they occasionally have trouble - but, just remember when picking out clothes - that a tricky button or zipper could be the difference in making it to the bathroom on time!

As always, the above list are merely generalizations. No child is ever the same. Some children may be ahead of these guidelines, while others may not completely have a couple of them mastered. If your child has just begun to learn a task, but hasn’t mastered it yet, just try practicing it more with them. Make it a game, and keep the learning fun. However, if for some reason you are worried that your child may be behind or not ready for Kindergarten, be sure to call your local school or Board of Education for guidance and resources.

Simple Fun: Marble Painting

Marble Painting

You will need:
Marbles
Non-toxic paint
A pringles can
White computer paper

Loosely roll up your white paper and put it in the pringles can. Soak the marbles in different colors of non-toxic paint and put in the can. Add lid and let the little ones shake the can. When they are finished, take the paper out and glue to construction paper for hanging.

TIP: Make sure the lid stays on!!!

We recently came across a new company called Yummy English Snack Productions, home to the YESnack CDs. L loves listening and dancing along to these creative and kid-friendly songs and I'm excited because I don't have to worry about the lyrics!

YESnack offers a 2 CD set that features over 43 unique songs!! Additionally, on their website you can find great stories that were inspired by the songs to share with your children - as well as the song lyrics. The songs are not only cute, but they are also chock full of information - like, the zodiac, lessons on why you shouldn't follow the crowd, and simple addition! And, for the older kids, a multiplication CD is included, making learning easier by putting it to music (up to the 12s).

These CDs are great for youngsters. I love that I can tell a story and we have a supporting song. I also love that these songs support great life lessons that I can teach and support...with music! Very fun, and I'm actually looking forward to breaking them back out when she starts learning multiplication!

Limeade

Limeade with a Touch of Mint Recipe

Ingredients

Grated zest of one lime (about 1 Tbsp)
1 cup lime juice (from about 4-6 Persian limes)
3/4 cup to 1 cup granulated sugar
3 cups water
Several sprigs of fresh mint

Method

1 In a small saucepan bring to a boil the sugar, one cup of water, and the lime zest. Once the sugar is dissolved (which it should be by the time the water boils), remove from heat and let cool for for a few minutes. The amount of sugar is a guideline, it depends on how sweet you like your limeade and how tart your particular limes are.

2 Place a strainer over a bowl, or wide-mouthed serving container, and pour the sugar syrup through it, straining out the lime zest. Add the lime juice and 2 cups of water. Taste for sour/sweet balance. If too sweet, add a little more lime juice. Add several sprigs of fresh mint.

Chill, or serve immediately over ice.

Makes about 1 quart.

Shad Boaz. He’s only 20 years old and he’s in the hospital right now.

And, I need a favor. A huge favor. You see, this boy and his parents are friends of our family. This morning, on the way to work, he lost a tire and while trying to over-correct, he swerved off the road (and possibly flipped - I’m not straight on that part of the story yet) and hit a tree…which then fell on his car. Currently, his brain is swollen but is being kept alive by a life support machine.

And, I need you all. I don’t care if you’ve never prayed, I don’t care if you think your prayers have never been answered. Heck, I don’t even care if you don’t believe in God. I. don’t. Care. I’m asking you to simply send up a prayer, that his brain will go back down to normal and that he’ll be okay. If you don’t pray, then will you please send up good thoughts, or meditate, or do it all. I FIRMLY believe that when enough people want the same thing, the universe/God hears us and it happens.

So, please…for me…for a few seconds will you back away from the computer and pray/send good thoughts/meditate for this boy (and his family, too)?

I would so very much appreciate it …

Little Pim, the creation of Julia Pimsleur Levine, is one of our favorite language learning tools for our daughter. We've been using the 3 DVD Spanish set. Each DVD is 35 minutes long and teaches over 60 words and phrases.

Husband and I both had Spanish in high school (college, too), but needed a refresher course in some things as we don't speak it often. We want our daughter to be multi-lingual and Little Pim is great for all three of us (and her grandparents!). The videos help jog our memory, while helping *L* learn new language sounds, words, and phrases. It's great!

All Natural Pet Remedies

All Natural Pet Remedies:

-For fresher breath in dogs : Fresh chopped Rosemary. If your dog is less than willing to eat it, try baking it into some homemade dog treats.

-Sore Stomaches and Car Sickness in dogs: Ginger. Because Ginger has such a strong taste, you may want to try a capsule like Blackmore’s Travel Calm Ginger. Also, you can grate ginger and add it to homemade peanut butter dog treats. Slippery elm is another natural digestive calmative. Try adding a crushed tablet to your dog’s food to calm an upset stomach or halt diarrhea.

-Worms and Parasites in dogs: Garlic. Add grated or chopped garlic directly to dog food to keep your dog’s intestinal tract clean and healthy.

-Cuts and Abrasions: Aloe Vera (just like for people)

-Fleas (cats or dogs): Eucalyptus, fennel, rosemary, rue, wormwood and yellow dock all have flea repelling properties. Blend together equal amounts of these dry herbs; mix well and sprinkle over the coat of your pet. Be sure to work in thoroughly down to the skin and avoid getting it in their eyes, inner ear, nose and mouth.

You can also add 1 teaspoon (or 1 tablet) per day of Brewer's Yeast to their food.

For hot spots related to flea bites (and your pet gnawing the bites), rub a little bit of diluted tea tree essential oil on the skin (keep away from the eyes and genitals) - this will keep your dog from licking and making it worse. Use with caution on cats and small dogs.

Babywearing is a constant theme in nature: Kangaroos, Gorillas, Koala Bears - and even some human cultures. In addition to the obvious freeing up of hands that is involved with babywearing, wearing your little one has many other advantages as well. According to Hunziker and Barr in their article in Pediatrics, babies who are carried cry on average 43% less overall and 54% less in the evening hours. And, according researchers such as Barr, Brazelton, Lee, and LeVine, in cultures where babies are carried almost continuously, babies cry much less than those in non-carrying cultures. Additionally, while in a sling or pouch, babies spend more time in a “quiet, alert state” when carried - which is ideal for learning. When carried, your child sees the world from your perspective and can experience the world fully, yet feel safe and secure. Not only does your child experience the world, but studies have shown that they bond with the person carrying them and often become independent at an earlier age.

So, what is babywearing? Babywearing is the term used to describe wearing your baby. Many babywearing devices have been constructed that will allow you to hold your baby in a variety of positions, depending on their stage of life.

Is it too late for me to wear my child? The best ages to wear your child are from infancy to early toddler-hood.

How do I do this? You’ll need a baby sling/pouch/wrap. Later, I’ll go over each type in more detail, so be sure to check back.

What types of activities can I do while wearing my child? You can clean, cook (please be very careful while using sharp and hot objects), hike, shop, play with children, craft, read, and a lot more because your hands will be free. We geocache with ours!

Before L was born, Steven and I enjoyed an activity called geocaching - an activity in which you use a GPS system to find caches, or mini- treasures, located at specific waypoints across the globe. It was a fun and incredibly cheap (FREE) activity that combined exploring, physical activity, and treasures. What's not to love?

Unfortunately, having a small child can sometimes put a bit of a damper on the geocaching experience - especially when it involves walking for extended periods of time and up steep hills and loose gravel, walking through poison ivy, and braving things like: creeks, ticks, mosquitoes, and the like! We had thought that we'd have to give up geocaching, unless of course we lined up a babysitter - we had never realized how a simple Sleepy Wrap could change our whole experience.

What to do when your baby (less than one year) chokes:

1. Place the infant face down across your forearm (resting your forearm on your leg) and support the infant’s head with your hand. Give four forceful blows to the back with the heel of your hand. You may have to repeat this several times until the obstructing object is coughed out.

2. If this does not work, turn the baby over. With two fingers one finger width below an imaginary line connecting the nipples, give four forceful thrusts to the chest to a depth of 1 inch. You may have to repeat this several times until the obstructing object is coughed out.

Many transit agencies across the nation are offering free rides and organizing fun events, so check with your local bus or rail company to get in on the good deals.

Dump the pump every day by joining the Kiss My Gass protest, which kicked off on Sunday. The campaign basically asks people to avoid a chosen oil company — at the moment, ExxonMobil — for a month, in an effort to simultaneously protest high gas prices while encouraging people to rethink their dependency on gasoline. While the organizers concede their actions likely won't bring the oil companies down in and of themselves, Kiss My Gass still encourages people to take direct, individual action to combat a big, worldwide problem.

If you're really angry at Exxon, join the Exxpose Exxon campaign. This effort, led by major environmental and public advocacy organizations like Greenpeace and Sierra Club, seeks to make the world's largest private oil company to face up to and take action to combat global climate change — as well as pay all of the punitive damages awarded to fisherman, Alaskan natives, and others injured by the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. Exxpose Exxon's action center has everything from a petition you can sign to tips on "adopting" a gas station.

Of course, the most direct action you can take against Exxon and other gas companies is simply to dump the pump!

Alfredo Chicken And Biscuits

Ingredients:

2 cups chopped fresh broccoli
1-1/2 cups sliced fresh carrots
1 cup chopped onion
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 cups cubed cooked chicken
1 carton (10 ounces) refrigerated Alfredo sauce
1 cup biscuit/baking mix
1/3 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon dill weed

Directions:

In a large skillet, saute the broccoli, carrots and onion in oil until crisp-tender. Stir in chicken and Alfredo sauce; heat through. Transfer to a lightly greased 8-in. square baking dish.
In a small bowl, combine the baking mix, milk and dill just until moistened. Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto chicken mixture.
Bake, uncovered, at 400° for 18-22 minutes or until bubbly and biscuits are golden brown. Yield: 4 servings.

Gather some cookie sheets or metal pizza pans and some magnets. Let your child play with the magnets by sticking them to the metal pans and then peeling them off. We use the free flat magnets with business advertisements, as there are no small pieces that could be swallowed...and, nothing to be broken.

If you don't have those, or you'd just like more fun, try creating your own fun magnets by buying magnet sheets or rolls and using some of the following to make customized magnets -

Glue magnets to the following:

Magazine cut outs
Pictures of family
Small toys (think gumball machine toys)
Stickers
Words that have been printed out

Summer is here - and so are long road-trips, sports games, camping, and boating - all of which can put a damper in pottying, whether trained or not. There are a lot of options out there for mini potties, and even training potties, but most make it hard to travel with and stow discreetly when not in use (who really wants an extra potty just laying in the floorboard - regardless of how many times Dora's face appears on it or how vigorously you scrubbed it clean??). Here's a new option for you, though: 2 in 1 Potette plus by Kalencom.

The Potette plus has a contoured seat and a sturdy, balanced base which will help your child feel comfortable and secure (meaning he/she will actually use it). My daughter amazes me in so many ways. Like, when she was younger - how she could sleep in her carseat with her neck all twisted and bent and still MANAGE TO MOVE it at ALL when she woke back up. Amazing, I tell you. But, that HAS to hurt. Ouch. It hurts me just thinking about it.

Picky Eaters

We've recently started a new phase - and have been involuntarily shoved into a group some may call: The Picky Eaters Club. Yes, that's right. After spending 2 hours grating, chopping, frying, and cooking two delicious meals...Lorelei decided she didn't want them. Either of them.

I tried both dishes myself, and I can tell you both were good (in fact, they became my lunches). So, why would she not eat them? Easy. Because they are not the baby equivalent of fig newton bars - fruit filled cereal bars, whole wheat bread, or bananas. Anything else gets thrown off her highchair tray to the dog (who should've been named Hoover).

The veggie fritter? In the floor. Fritatta? In the floor. Pasta Bites? Floor. Sandwich meat? Floor. Baby Food? Floor! All of her used-to-be favorites are no more - they've become very expensive dog food. And, she's left calling out "nana! nana? nana!!!!" - Code for: banana!!! Now! This child will eat as many bananas and as much bread as you will let her - I have a feeling that when this phase is over...she will like neither.

So, what do you do when your kid is a picky eater?

- Keep re-introducing foods. Sometimes it takes several tries for them to generally accept it. Don't try to guilt them or punish them for not eating. Simply offer it, and if they won't eat it, seal it up, put it in the fridge and try again at the next meal.
-Try presenting the same foods in unusual ways. For older kids, you can use cookie cutters to make crazy sandwich critters. Use bow tie pasta (or other pasta shapes) instead of spaghetti if they no longer want spaghetti.
-Give them what you are eating. If you give JR peas and carrots and you are chowing down on pizza, isn't it obvious that they are going to want what you have? So, you should be eating what they are eating - so as not to give the impression that even mommy/daddy doesn't want the food they have to eat.
-Give less liquid DURING or before meals. Hand over the cup after they finish eating...or moderate quick sips in between.
-Introduce new foods along with foods you know your little one likes, and in small amounts. Be sure to introduce new foods when child is hungry, so they are more likely to try them.
-Minimize nearby distractions
-Look for ways to make the foods he/she eats more nutritional - adding fruit to cereal or oatmeal or plain yogurt, making a smoothie, adding veggies to sauces or "hiding them" in foods.

Zucchini & Tomato Frittata

Try this great and healthy dish for young and old alike...

Ingredients:

2 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, peeled and chopped
2/3 cup zucchini, thinly sliced
salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 tomatoes, skinned, deseeded and chopped
4 eggs
1 tbsp milk
2 tbsp freshly grated Parmesan cheese

How to:

Heat the oil in a 9-in nonstick frying pan. Add the onion and zucchini, season lightly with salt and pepper, and cook for about 15 minutes. Add the tomatoes and continue to cook for 3-4 minutes.

Beat the eggs with the milk and pepper, and pour over the vegetables. Cook over med. heat for about 5 minutes, or until the eggs are set.

*You can mix in other veggies, and add cheese, too if you want!

Tasty Tuesdays - Easy Chicken Pot Pie

Easy Chicken Pot Pie

1 stick melted butter
1/3 cup all purpose flour
1 tsp chopped onion flakes
1 can chicken broth
2/3 cup milk
2 large can chicken breast
2 servings size can green peas
2 servings size carrots
1 can peeled, sliced potatoes
salt and pepper to taste
1 can biscuits (homestyle best used)

9x13 baking dish

Over medium heat,brown flour and onion flakes in melted butter.
Stir in broth and milk.
Add chicken and vegetables, stirring until well blended.
Salt and pepper to taste.

Lightly grease baking dish. Press ½ can of the biscuits out to be a little flatter, so they won't rise a lot and will be "crust-like". Place the pressed biscuits on bottom of dish. Pour chicken mixture over biscuits. Top with remaining biscuits.

Bake according to biscuit can directions.

Alterations:

*If you use a smaller dish, like a 9x9, buy only one serving each of the veggies (look on the back of the can).

*If you like chunk chicken, be sure that you buy that in the can, or chunk your own.

*You can use almost any vegetables you have on hand...and, even leftover chicken.

*We actually used 2 cans of biscuits. Hey, we like loads of bread. So, if you do too...you may want to pick up 2 cans!

BPA - and more...

I'm sure by now, you've heard it all in the news: BPA in bottles. Most of you know it can be harmful (and has shown as such in lab animals), and some of you may even know that companies such as Toys R Us are working towards clearing their shelves of bottles that contain BPA (Good for them). But, what some of you don't realize is - BPA is in WAY more than just bottles. I'm not trying to start a freak out fest, here...but you should know. For example, the plastics you eat off of, the disposable containers you put food in to store in the fridge, your water pipes could all have BPA (depending on what you use). BPA is NOT a new thing. We're just learning about it - our society kind of has this "do now-ask questions later" approach. And now, tests have confirmed that BPA has also been found in....canned foods. As in, your favorite spaghetti sauces and veggies (and more). In general, the more acidic the food is (tomatoes, fruits, etc.), the more BPA it leaches.

In order to not cause a public uproar, the government is taking a very laid back stance on this, saying there is nothing to be concerned about. However, the scientists are not in agreeance - they say that the evidence shows harm in lab animals and it may be the same for humans. But, they aren't positive yet, and neither should the government be, either.

The good news: There are some companies that use special BPA-free products for your food (like Eden Foods). And then of course, there's always paper cartons and jarred foods.

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself - an intro, so to speak:
I have a hubby of 22 years and three sometimes argumentive but mostly charming children: Mackenzie-17, Mitchell 13 and Spencer 10. I am a stay-at-home mom who speaks and writes on the side and am a member of the Proverbs 31 Ministries speaking team and a volunteer for Hearts at Home and organization who mission is to help moms love their lives. I love to see my daughter act on stage, watch my boys play sports, hang out with my husband discussing life and read my Bible. I love to cook and organize. I love to write handwritten notes. I hate to clean and can't sew to save my life. I hate to send emails and type as slow as a snail. I also have pitiful, partially finished scrapbooks and no real personal hobbies. In 8 years when Spencer is gone, I'll find one in my "spare time" unless, of course, I'm a Grandma by then!! :-)

2. Please tell us a little about your books and what led you to write them?
My first two Homespun Gifts from the Heart and Homespun Memories for the Heart were co-written with my best friend from college and a dear friend from church. They are designed to provide easy, doable ideas for moms who want to remember their loved ones with creative gifts or make special memories with their kids on holidays, holy days or the every days of life. My first solo book was A Life That Says Welcome and it chronicles my tale of marrying into a family of decorators, cooks and bed and breakfast owners while I myself could barely boil water! It is about 1/3 story driven and biblical hospitality info and 2/3 practical ideas on decorating, cleaning and recipe ideas. It also encourages hospitality on the road--reaching out to those with whom your life naturally intersects. My most recent book is The Complete guide to Getting and Saying Organized. It is an idea driven, practical and doable workbook type volume that walks moms through setting the bar where they want it and crafting their own plan to manage their time and organize their stuff. It definitely is NOT one size fits all!

3. What is one of your favorite "life lessons" that God has taught you thus far?
God is sometimes in the plans, often in the waiting and always in the interruptions!

4. When it comes to cleaning and organizing, I hear a lot of people who are very discouraged and tired. What would you say to them to help them along? Any tips, suggestions, or words of advice?
They need to take into account their particular lifestyle and stage of life and not try to replicate someone else's slick plan. I like to encourage women to learn strategies to take care of the have tos of life in an efficient manner so that they have more time for the want tos of life!!

5. Have a quick organizational and/or cleaning tip you'd like to divulge? Pretty please?
It sounds old fashioned but I have found it to be true--have a place for everything and everything in its place! Grandma was right! I find most women suffer from what I call the "for now" syndrome and it causes great distress in their life. You know all of those piles of "for now"....I'll place this junk mail here..for now. Or I will set this clean laundry over there....for now. Or I'll just lay this junk I don't know what to do with here....for now. Pretty soon we have piles for for now all over the house staring us in the face and making us feel defeated!!!!!!

6. Any tips especially for moms/dads with younger children in the home, regarding life, love, and happiness - and cleaning and organization, of course!?
Get the family on the same team. Your hubby and kids are not the enemy. Satan and his distractions are the enemy. Her wants us to bicker, complain, mess each other up and divide and conquer our family! Don't let him. Have a plan. Work the plan. Work together so that your home stays relatively in order and you can free up time to spend together as a family doing something you love to do!!!

7. And, how about some tips for older parents and grandparents who have trouble parting with their things, and end up feeling so tired and disgusted that they jump ship before they even start?
Enlist the help of someone who is not emotionally attached to your stuff. It is just STUFF!!!! Weeding out and organizing is good for the soul. And maybe some of your stuff can go to help someone else who will actually use it!!! I have an entire chapter on de-junking your house ridding it of items no longer needed. It is one that readers tell me was the most helpful for them. I say away with the junk!!!!

Getting Organized - And, Staying That Way!

As some of you know, I've taken a challenge for the year 2008 to organize my ENTIRE home. I call it: Project Organization 2008. You can ooh and aah later at the brilliance of that title, but right now...I need you to focus!

A few weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to read The Complete Guide to Getting and Staying Organized by Karen Ehman. And, I have to say - if you were to buy just ONE book to help you regain focus and motivation to clean (without making you feel like the worst mother/Christian ever) THIS book is IT.

In her book, Karen touched my heart with some of the things she had to say:

"They (lists) are no longer my taskmaster and I their slave. Instead, they are my Global Positioning System ... pointing me in the right direction but allowing me to still recieve a call from the Lighthouse asking me to alter my course for a while."

And, how true that statement is! Sometimes, I let my lists take over my day, making me less open to opportunities and people who need me because they wouldn't "fit" with the previous list. But, no more. In Karen's book, she shows how to be organized while still being flexible - and how to do it in the easiest way possible.

Another huge help I've had in organizing not only my home, but my life, was the Hearts at Home Planner (also a product by Karen Ehman). These planners are genius! - With fill-in calendars, menu planners, contacts, notes, and more! They also come in zippered and non zippered!

Each book has watercolor illustrations and great lessons geared for little minds in 200 words or less (in poetry form, no less). Baby's Vision

1 week - Focuses on objects approximately 8-12 inches away.
Play idea: Try making frequent eye contact with baby, newborns love looking at familiar faces - especially distinguished features like the eyes and hairline (if you have dark hair) and mouth.

1 month - Notices movement, high-contrast in patterns and colors, and some simple patterns.
Play idea: Try a black and white (or blue and white) mobile with large patterns. Don't want to spend the cash? Make your own patterns on cardstock with paper cut-outs and hang them with string - But, use with caution. Be sure string is secure and out of baby's reach and NOT over the crib (or any place a sibling toddler could get the string).

2 months - Follows moving object with eyes - First from side to side, and then up and down.
Play idea: Move a toy back and forth, and up and down - letting baby follow it with their eyes.

3 months - Begins to pick up on colors more clearly.
Play idea: Offer baby toys in bright colors and name them as you go (Blue block. Red ball.).

First up: What do you think about little kids getting their hair "did" as little kids. I don't mean hair cuts and rollers for church - I mean: highlights, colors, etc. What's acceptable? What's not? Do you have any personal age limits? And, why do you feel the way you do?

Games for 3 to 6 Months

Textures. Grab a basket and fill it with things of all textures - cloth, clean sponges, twigs, leaves, etc. And, while supervised, let baby feel each item and describe each feeling as you go (rough, smooth, soft, prickly, etc.) Helps baby develop her sense of touch.

Clink Clunk. Using an empty oatmeal container, place one of baby's small toys inside (while she doesn't see) and close the lid. Shake the container gently and roll it back and forth on the floor to see what noises it makes, saying "What could that be?" Then, while baby is watching, open the can and roll out the toy, saying "Oh! It was you..." Encourages visual and audio tracking, and reinforces the concept that things exist even when baby can't see them.

Tummy Slide. Lay baby on her tummy and place a toy in front of her, just out her reach. Use your hands to press against her feet. She will press her feet against your hands, causing her to slide forward towards her toy. Strengthens baby's upper body and leg muscles and helps prepare her for crawling. Improves problem solving skills.

Talk Back. Use a favorite stuffed toy in front of baby's face, making it dance. When baby begins babbling, with the stuffed animal in front of her face, make the exact same sounds. When baby repeats, use the same sound again and add a few more. For example, if baby says "da!" You might respond "da-da-oh". If baby responds again, be sure to make a big fuss! Encourages baby to vocalize.

Cause and Effect. Puff your cheeks with air and use baby's hands or fingers to press them, blowing air out of your mouth. You can do a variety of things, even adding silly things like having baby grab your finger and sticking out your tongue. Helps baby learn cause and effect.

Wiggle. Turn on some upbeat music and wiggle and shake. Then stop. Wiggle or shake one body at a time, starting with fingertips all the way to your toes. Change the tempo, either speeding things up or slowing things down. Stop, and wiggle your fingers up and down on baby's body. Finish by clapping baby's hands or tapping baby's feet. Improves body awareness and exposes baby to both movement and music.

Ball Play. Using a large inflated ball or exercise ball, put baby on her tummy on the ball. Hold her steady and gently roll the ball slightly backwards and forwards and side to side. Helps develop neck muscles and balance.

Mirror Time. Put baby in front of a mirror and let her play. She won't understand that the baby is her yet, but she'll love that when she does something, so will the baby in the mirror. Helps baby begin to realize what a reflection is.

Games for Birth to 3 months

Expressions. Sit in front of a full-length mirror with baby with a blank look and suddenly change to a smile and say, "Happy!" Then, back to a blank look. Try other expressions, too. Baby won't understand just yet, but he'll love watching you. Benefits include bonding and helps develop eye-tracking abilities.

Tickle Bee. Form a "bee" by placing your thumb and index finger together. Move your bee above baby in swooping circles and then let it swoop down and in a high pitch voice, say "Buzz, buzz, buzz!" and tickle baby. Baby will love the suspense and the gentle tickling. This game will help develop eye-tracking skills and sense of touch.

Tummy Fun. Lie on your back and place baby on your stomach, tummy-side down. With your face just inches away from baby's , make eye contact and sing and talk. Helps baby begin to develop neck and arm strength.

Follow It. Hold a light-weight, brightly colored toy approximately 12 inches from baby's face. Let baby focus and then slowly move the toy side to side and up and down, letting baby track the toy. Helps baby focus and track objects.

Sway time. Hold baby and sway from side to side to music (gently). Enhances baby's awareness of rhythm and melody.

If you didn't read the title, you may be curious as to what the above pictures are. Well, I'm sure you guessed fabric-somethings...but, what I have to tell you is so much cooler. They're swaddling blankets by Solana Babywear.

The seven types of stool are:

Type 1: Separate hard lumps, like nuts (hard to pass)
Type 2: Sausage-shaped, but lumpy
Type 3: Like a sausage but with cracks on its surface
Type 4: Like a sausage or snake, smooth and soft
Type 5: Soft blobs with clear cut edges (passed easily)
Type 6: Fluffy pieces with ragged edges, a mushy stool
Type 7: Watery, no solid pieces (entirely liquid)

Types 1 and 2 indicate constipation, with 3 and 4 being the "ideal stools" especially the latter, as they are the easiest to pass. 5-7 being further tending towards diarrhea or cholera.
